1. A Brief History of The Clock Marker

Inscription. The clock was built in the Bill Brothers Machine Works on Water Street in Cuyahoga Falls in 1863/1864. The brothers had been tower clock builders in Connecticut before moving to Ohio. The clock was installed, by Israel James, in the original Methodist Episcopal Society of Cuyahoga Falls Church, when it was remodeled and its handsome tower added in 1864. It not only served to mark the time for the early villagers, but the bell was also used as the town fire bell.

The clock was removed from the tower in August of 1920, while the present church structure, at 3rd St. and Portage Trail, was built. Laurel James, son of Israel James, rebuilt and reinstalled the clock in the new church tower, in October of 1921. The air was once again filled with the tolling of the hours. In 1970 the original clock works were placed in storage when it was replaced with an electric clock. In 1994 the clock was brought out of storage and refurbished. It was then installed in this new tower and was once again marking the passage of time in October of 1995.
