Inscription. At a special memorial meeting held march 12, 1923 in honor of Charlotte Vail in John Greene Hall, Northampton, Mass. where the faculty, student-body and friends were assembled President Neilson of Smith College said:

"Most of us are imbued with the tendency to be satisfied with mediocre achievement in all departments of life. We have little relish for excellence in anything, for perfection in anything; and yet, it is the achievement of excellence that gives value to life."

"Charlotte Vail of the class of 1923 was indeed a gifted person. She saw that there was little else in life more worthy than carrying the talent she possessed to the highest possible point - that is the kind of perfection in a short life that fulfills the long life."

"Her aim and her accomplishment of that aim in her short life are monumental and inspiring, and I would think of Charlotte Vail in the future as one of those persons who, even as an under- graduate, carried effort to its full extent."

News of the death of Miss Charlotte Vail, 20 years old, yesterday at North Hampton, Mass., where she was a senior at Smith College, came as a shock to her many friends and acquaintances in Cincinnati.

Miss Vail was the daughter of Dr. Derrick T. Vail, Sr., widely known eye specialist of Cincinnati. She had been in Cincinnati during the Christmas holidays, when she was a guest at a number of entertainments in her honor.

Miss Vail became ill of pneumonia a week ago and her parents and brother, Dr. H. H. Vail and sister, Mrs. Harold S. Dwight, went to North Hampton. Her other sister, Mrs. Lelvill Borders, of Kansas City, and her brother, Dr. Derrick T. Vail, Jr., a student at Harvard Medical College, also were with Miss Vail when she died.

and immediately became a favorite, not only for her beauty, but for her personality and her wide interest in the many philanthropic agencies in which her mother was also active. Miss Vail was an accomplished violinist.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Vail residence, 1950 Madison Road, Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock. Burial will be in Franklin, Ohio. (Submitted on June 14, 2026, by Craig Doda of Napoleon, Ohio.)
