❖ The Organization
The Knights of Rizal is a civic and patriotic organization that was established by law as an instrumentality by which the teachings of Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, may be propagated among the Filipino people and other nationalities, so that, through his inspired ideals and examples, they may emulate and follow his greatness. In addition, the Knights of Rizal is also a cultural, non-sectarian, non-partisan and non-racial organization.

❖ Brief History
The history of the Order of the Knights of Rizal go back to December 30, 1911 when Col. Antonio C. Torres organized a group of 9 men from different walks of life for the purpose of commemorating, in a fitting manner, the execution and martyrdom of Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

Thereafter, year after year, the same group would gather to celebrate the birth (June 19) and commemorate the death (December 30) of Rizal. During Rizal Day celebrations, this group would be seen conspicuously on horseback reminiscent of the knights of old known for their chivalry and exemplary life.

To provide a continuing entity and to encourage others to join them, these admirers of Dr. Rizal organized, on November 16, 1916, a private non stock corporation and named it the “Orden de

Caballeros de Rizal” and was granted a congressional charter on June 14, 1951 (Republic Act 646).

As of 31 December 2023, it has 180 chapters throughout the Philippines and 52 chapters in foreign countries, with more chapters in the process of organization.

Friends of Plaza Rizal Project

The Knights of Rizal New Jersey Chapter in cooperation with the Ladies for Rizal New Jersey Chapter launched the “Friends of Plaza Rizal Project” in September 2021. To spotlight the value and significance of the Plaza and to advance its appreciation by the community by committing to furthering its upkeep, improvement and beautification are the two main goals of the project.

Commissioned in November 2000, Plaza Rizal, located at 272 Columbus Drive corner Brunswick Street in downtown Jersey City, hosts two important events every year: Dr. Jose Rizal’s birth anniversary on June 19th and his Martyrdom on December 30th.

It is a paramount objective of the KOR NJ Chapter to propel the vastly celebrated life and legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal into the intellect and consciousness of Filipino Americans, specifically the youth, so they may believe in his teachings to the end they emulate
