Lusitania Centenary 2015
The Lusitania was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-20 off the Old Head of Kinsale on 7th May 1915. Close to 1200 people perished. Most of the survivors and bodies that were recovered were brought to Queenstown.
These tiles commemorate the lives of those lost and interred in the Old Church Cemetery just north of the town. The project was conceived, researched and promoted by HSCL coordinator Anna Keating. It was a collaborative effort by parents, members of the Active Retirement group and members of the community, under the instruction of Art teacher Mairead Geary. The tiles are mounted here, close to the three piers where the survivors and dead were brought ashore.
