1. The War of 1812 in the Sugarloaf Settlement - south-east side
Inscription. [Plaque on south-east side:]
After the fall of Fort Erie in May of 1813, Sugarloaf farmers with their wagons assisted the British retreat of the 41st Regiment through here to the Grand River. This settlement and the militia stationed here were attacked three times later that year by Capt. Cyrenius Chapin's American mounted riflemen who spared Zavitz Mill from destruction. On Oct. 28, 1814, renegade leader John Dixon was mortally wounded by a militia guard posted near the mill, thereby marking the end of active hostilities on the Niagara Peninsula. Torn down in the late 1800's, Zavitz Mill was located a short distance west of here beside the creek entering Gravelly Bay.

Dedicated to the memory of the men from the townships of Humberstone and Wainfleet who served in the 3rd Regiment of Lincoln Militia from 1812 to 1814.
