An dieser Stelle stand ein Barockgebäude aus dem Jahre 1717, in dem sich ab 1776 das »Hôtel de Saxe« befand. Das Gebäude wurde nach Kriegsschäden 1968 abgebrochen. In den Neubau von 1978 wurde 1982 das rekonstruierte Portal eingefügt. Das originale Tor ist im Eingangsbereich des Hauses Klostergasse 7 ausgestellt.

In dem Hotel weilten u. a. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821), Gebhard Leberecht Blücher (1742–1819), August Neidhardt Gneisenau (1760–1831), Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832).

Ludwig Würkert (1800–1876), Protagonist der Revolution von 1848, betrieb hier ab 1858 als Besitzer des Hauses ein Restaurant mit politischen Bildungsveranstaltungen. Die ersten Versammlungen des »Allgemeinen Deutschen Arbeitervereins« fanden hier 1863 statt. Zugleich war es Sitz des Vereins »Vorwärts«, aus dem unter August Bebels (1840–1913) Leitung 1865 der »Leipziger Arbeiterbildungsverein« hervorging.

after suffering war damage. The reconstructed portal was incorporated into the new building of 1978 in 1982. The original gate is displayed in the entrance area of the building at Klostergasse 7.

Among those who stayed at the hotel were: Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821), Gebhard Leberecht Blücher (1742–1819), August Neidhardt Gneisenau (1760–1831), and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832).

Ludwig Würkert (1800–1876), a leading figure of the Revolution of 1848, operated a restaurant here from 1858 onward after becoming the owner of the building. The restaurant hosted political educational events. The first meetings of the “General German Workers' Association” were held here in 1863. At the same time, it served as the headquarters of the “Forward Association (Vorwärts)”, from which the “Leipzig Workers' Educational Association” emerged in 1865 under the leadership of August Bebel (1840–1913).
