Mile Square in Indianapolis in Marion County, Indiana — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Fletcher Place Historic District
Much of this predominantly residential neighborhood was originally Woodlawn, the farm of pioneer lawyer and banker Calvin Fletcher. In 1871, the Fletcher Place Methodist Episcopal Church rose at the corner of Fletcher and Virginia Avenues and gave its name to the neighborhood. The former church is now condominiums. Working class German and Irish immigrants settled in the cottages and two story frame and brick houses of the neighborhood beginning in the 1850s. On South Collete Avenue, the Milano Inn and Iarias Restaurant recall the later arrival of Italian families. Architectural styles in Fletcher Place include Federal, Italianate, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, and Vernacular. Construction of Interstate 76-70 in the 1970s to the east created a self contained neighborhood which along with the Holy Rosary / Danish Church District has attracted new residents and revitalization since 1980.
