Leading mules down the D&H Canal's towpath didn't require much skill, just a willingness to walk—all day! Boys and girls as young as seven years old led the animals, commanding them to stop and go—"ho" and "gee"—along the way from Honesdale to Rondout.

Canal lore suggests that if a child and their mules fell in the canal, the mules should be rescued first, for they were much more expensive than the child who guided them.
