1. St John the Baptist Church Gardens Marker
Inscription. The church of St. John the Baptist was consecrated in 1842, the first Church in the town to serve the spiritual needs of the growing population of Southend-on-Sea. It has continued to have close links with the Community to the present day.

Its gardens are he last resting place for leading poet Robert Buchanan and for many of the Town's earliest benefactors and dignitaries. There is also a lasting memorial to the author George Warwick Deeping.

Southend-on-Sea's first Mayor Thomas Dowsett is buried here as at several former distinguished Alderman together with relatives of Admiral Lord Nelson. In keeping with the Town's links to the sea, it is also the last resting place of Mr J Moore, first coxswain of the local lifeboat crew.
