Many homes were destroyed in the Salado Creek flood of 1998. In 2007, Bexar County Leadership announced using the Community Venues Program for developing amateur sports facilities. Eastside Community Leaders saw this as an opportunity to turn the devastation brought on by the flood into a rebirth of a community and created the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex.
A special acknowledgement goes to Rev. Dr. E. Thurman Walker for having the Vision and Leadership to make this happen; Mrs. Ernestine Green for her dedication to the Community and City Councilwomen Ivy R. Taylor and Sheila McNeal for committing resources in support of this endeavor.
