Slessor Hall
Historic name: Judson Carpenter House
Built: 1906
Architect: C. W. Buchanan
Builder: W. C. Crowell
Named for Mary Slessor, missionary to Nigeria (then Calabar), this building served as the first women's dormitory at Fuller Theological Seminary. At the age of 27, Slessor, a Scottish Presbyterian mill worker, journeyed to Africa where she labored as an evangelist and circuit preacher. Inspired by David Livingstone, she spent 38 years in the interior of Africa laying the foundation for later missions. Though often lonely, Slessor found comfort in ministering to the children around her. Toward the end of her life, she described it as a "witness to the perfect joy and satisfaction of a single life."
The Judson Carpenter House occupies a commanding site at the center of the old Ford Place subdivision. Representative of the early craftsman style, the Carpenter House is rich in detail. The exterior is little changed from when first constructed. The L-shaped concrete porch, exposed beveled beams, and long bands of transom windows were motifs common to Pasadena architecture at the turn of the century. The house cost $19,235 to build, which was more than double the cost of any other residence in Ford Place.
Erected by Fuller Theological Seminary.
