Just before midnight they came to the market town of Sudbury. Pongo paused as they crossed the bridge over the River Stour. "Here we enter Suffolk," he said. triumphantly. They ran on through the quiet streets of old houses and into the market square. They had hoped they might meet some dogs and hear if any news of the puppies had come at the Twilight Barking, but not so much as a cat was stirring. While they were drinking at the fountain, church clocks began to strike Midnight.

2. Dodie Smith Marker
This civic amenity was presented to the town by Alice Mary Brown in 1882. The original top was destroyed by a lorry but replaced by a replica in 2016. There is no water flowing now but originally it provided water for local people, their horses, cats and dogs. The fountain featured famously in Dodie Smith's book "101 Dalmatians" and bears a plaque to that effect.(Submitted on July 6, 2026.)
