[Gaeilge:]
“Is ón gcoillearnach dhlúth a chlúdaíonn an chuid seo den tír atáimid ag fáil an adhmaid le haghaidh an Dúin. Is contúirteach an rud é na crainn a leagan. Bíonn na Gaeil i bhfolach sna coillte seo. Ionsaíonn siad go rialta muid agus, mar sin, ní mór dúinn saighdiúirí faoi airm a bheith linn le cosaint a thabhairt dúinn.

Nuair a bheidh an Dún tógtha, beidh sé níos éasca na daoine áitiúla a chur faoi chois agus riail Shasana a chur i bhfeidhm. Tá an post seo deacair ach íocann sé go maith agus is féidir liom tacú le mo theaghlach.”

[English:]
“We are taking the timber for the Fort from the dense woodland which covers this part of the country. Cutting down the trees is dangerous. The Irish hide in these woods and attack us regularly so armed soldiers must protect us.

Once the Fort is built it will be easier to suppress the local clans and impose English rule. This job is hard but it pays well and I can support my family.”
