The Battle of Leatherwood
On October 19, 1962 Captain David J. Claudill, and his men from Company B of the 10th Mounted Rifles were guarding a salt works in Leatherwood, Kentucky. The production of salt was very important to the economy of the area at that time. Captian George Morgan and Lieutenant Clabe Jones with their battalion came toward Leatherwood to attack the guarding Confederates. They took their positions across a creek from the guards and opened fire. Shots were fired and several of the men from the 10th Mounted Rifles were wounded. A battle ensued and lasted several minutes. The 10th Mounted Rifles quickly retreated to Whitesburg, Kentucky because they had lost their position.

On the weekend in October nearest the historical date, Civil War re-enactment groups come from all over to restage the Battle of Leatherwood. The battle site is just off Kentucky Route 7 near the Letcher/Perry County line. Come and talk with "General Robert E. Lee" or "President Abraham Lincoln", tour the old buildings, take in the period clothes, browse the sutler's booths, read the list of battle participants, and watch the battle.
