Immer weniger Schiffe kamen in Oudeschild an.

After 1800, business on the Texel Roads collapsed. The crew of the local ships, pilot and fishing boats came upon hard times. Fewer and fewer ships sailed to Oudeschild. Part of the harbour filled with sand and was returned to land. That is now the quay where grain house the 'Pakhuis' stands. In later days, the harbour would be extended once again for the ferry service, fishing fleet and pleasure craft.

Leendert campaigned for a long time to have a harbour constructed on Texel. The authorities in Amsterdam were against the idea but eventually Leendert won his case. Leendert determined the location and design and supervised construction. The harbour came into use in 1780. The original harbour is recognizable today as the southernmost part of the current harbour of Oudeschild.
