Inscription.   [Gaeilge:]
Tá cailín óg ina cónaí taobh amuigh den Dún in éineacht lena máthair.

[English:]
A young girl lives outside the Fort with her mother.

1567

[Gaeilge:]
“Bhíodh cónaí orainn i nDoire na nGarrán ach tháinig na Gaill lenár gcuid talún a sciobadh uainn. Maraíodh m’athair. Deir mo Mháthair nach ligeann na Sasanaigh dúinn ár dtalamh féin a bheith againn agus is é sin an fáth go gcoinníonn na clann ag ionsaí an Dún seo.

Féach ar na ballaí cloiche — tá siad tiubh, ard agus timpeallaithe ag díog dhomhain. Gach lá feicim capaill agus saighdiúirí ag dul isteach agus amach as na geataí. Thug na Sasanaigh Maryborough ar an a bhí acu i ndiaidh na Banríon Máire. Bíonn margadh anseo gach seachtain, áit a mbuaileann na lonnaitheoirí le chéile.”

[English:]
“My family used to live in Derrygarran but strangers came and took our land. My father was killed. Mother says the English do not allow us to own our land and that is why the clans keep attacking this Fort.

Look at the stone walls — they are thick, high and surrounded by a deep ditch. Every day I see horses and soldiers going in and out of the gates. The English named this place Maryborough after their Queen Mary. There is a market here every week, where the settlers meet.”
