The Alexander Hughes Community Center is located on the site of the former Danbury School. Opened in December 1968, Danbury operated as both a traditional elementary school and as a school for students with physical disabilities until 1973. After that, the facility continued to serve students with disabilities and health impairments and housed the district's Instructional Media Center and other special services.

In 1996, the Claremont Unified School District decided the Danbury School program should be integrated onto the campus of one of its other elementary schools, a move that was completed with the opening of the new Danbury School in June 1998.

When the school district announced it wanted to sell the former Danbury site in 1996, the City of Claremont purchased it so it could be renovated into a comprehensive community center. Residents and community leaders had recognized the need for such a center in Claremont for more than 25 years.

The Claremont City Council officially named the center in honor of former Mayor Alexander Hughes in June 1998. Mayor Hughes was widely recognized
