Amnesty International is a worldwide movement independent of all government political factions, ideologies, economic interests and religious creeds —- that seeks the release of men and women detained anywhere for their beliefs, color, sex, ethnic origin, language, or religion provided they have neither used nor advocated violence. They are termed prisoners of conscience.

In 1948 the South County Chapter of Amnesty International planted this tree as a living memorial to “prisoners of conscience”. Remember them. July 27, 1944
