1. Oldtown Culvert Marker

Inscription.
This culvert carried the Hocking Canal over Oldtown Creek. This structure was built by 1840 and still in perfect shape after 180 years. Both sides on the top of the culvert have walls built up at least 4 feet high that allowed the water flowing over the culvert to float a canal boat. The canal was replaced by trains as a more reliable mode of transportation by 1868. The last canal boat to cross this culvert was in 1889, carrying coal to Logan.
