1. Catskill Walking Tour Marker

Inscription. The Hudson River as we know it today has played a central role in the evolution of culture and commerce for at least 20,000 years, when the last ice sheet the 350 food thick Wisconsin began to retreat in an era glacial warming. The river begins at Lake Tear of the Clouds on the southwest slope of Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks and flows for 895 miles through scenery that is considered to be among the most majestic and beautiful in North America, winding to an end in the great underwater Hudson Canyon, some 15,000 feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean’s surface.

To the north you see the 5,400-foot-long Rip Van Winkle Bridge, named after Washington Irving’s lovable knave who slept for 20 years in the Catskill Mountains. The bridge which connects Greene and Columbia counties was dedicated on July 2, 1934.

Directly across the river is Olana, the majestic home of Frederic Church, famed second generation artist of the Hudson River School.
