1. Improvements After the War Marker
In September 1945, with the conclusion of the war and the impending return of hundreds of men and women, the City administration made plans to improve Gillette and provide employment for all who wished to return and live here. The city was prepared to spend $50,000 of its own funds and $50,000 in federal funds for postwar projects. The majority of those funds were to fill in the Burlington Ditch. When filled in, the lots through which the ditch ran became much more functional. Storm sewers were planned which would provide the drainage previously provided by the ditch.
