Sundials were invented 3,500 years ago by the Babylonians. The base is marked with divisions of time and must be level. The gnomon, an upright indicator, casts the shadow. It is set parallel to the Earths axis and points to true north, not magnetic north. Sundials tell apparent time. Clocks tell mean time. They agree only 4 times a year. Only the 100 yr. time capsule was filled in 1990 for the Wyoming Centennial Project.
