Congratulations to the Kitchener Horticultural Society (gardenKitchener) on its 150th Anniversary.
The early history of a horticultural organization in this community dates back to 1872, when Alexander Young, a school Principal, organized a junior horticultural society. In 1882 a horticultural society was formed. John Motz was the first President. The Kitchener Horticultural Society is one of the longest running Societies in Ontario.
In 1927, the City leased the triangular piece of land between then King Street and the railroad. It was called The Janzen Gardens. In 1930, the society leased the rest of the property and the name was changed to Rockway Gardens. The society continues to maintain one of the most visited botanical gardens in Southwestern Ontario.
KHS is pleased to have been associated with the Gardens for almost 100 years and to have helped educate the residents throughout the City on horticultural practices for 150 years.
