On this site in 1865 Dr. William Worrall Mayo constructed his first (and only) dedicated medical office building in Rochester. Later destroyed by fire, it was described as a neat and pleasant office (Rochester City Post, June 10, 1865).

Excerpt: The site marks the location of where Dr. William Worrall Mayo built his first and only dedicated medical office in Rochester. A business card listing the W.W. Mayo office located on Third Street led to a scavenger hunt through newspapers to pin down the exact site. The discovery was that WW Mayo had his first office in a wooden building here. 2. William Worrall Mayo (Wikipedia).
Excerpt: William Worrall Mayo (May 31, 1819 March 6, 1911) was an English American medical doctor and chemist. He is best known for establishing the private medical practice that later evolved into the Mayo Clinic. On April 24, 1863, Mayo was named examining surgeon for the first Minnesota draft board headquartered in Rochester, Minnesota. He left his family for that position and soon found the new city to his liking, so they joined him there in early 1864. Mayo opened a solo medical practice in Rochester in 1863. He partnered with W. A. Hyde from February to June 1864 before going back to solo practice. In November 1867, Mayo entered into a partnership with pharmacist O. W.
