Massacre at Long Beach Island
October 26, 1782
Near this place, privateer Capt. Andrew Steelman, his crew from the armed row galley Alligater, and a few local residents slept on the beach after an exhausting day of unloading the cargo from the cutter, en route from Belgium to St. Thomas, that ran aground on the Barnegat shoals. Notorious Capt. John Bacon with a band of loyalists attacked and captured the ship and cargo. According to patriots' accounts, about twenty mostly unarmed and unsuspecting patriots, including Capt. Steelman, were slaughtered.
