1. The Boneyard Marker

The Boneyard. . Approximately 200 metres off the Rotary Beach Arch is the 'boneyard' for the historic Port of Goderich. Shipbuilders in years gone by used this area as a dumping ground for the remains of vessels that had foundered or were derelict. Another method of disposal for unwanted hulls was to load them with straw and tar and set them ablaze and adrift, for an evening's entertainment during an offshore breeze. The remnants of at least four wrecks are still visible at this ship boneyard location. Because of shallow water, winter storms sometimes move the wreckage around., "The tug, Phillips, after being stripped of her boilers, engine and all metal trimmings, was sent to the 'boneyard' on Tuesday morning. She was beached just below the Sunset Hotel where the Abercorn, Scotia, Olga, Tecumseh and other vessels have found a last resting place. " From a 1932 Signal Star, Ongoing efforts by the Huron Shores Chapter of the Save Ontario Shipwrecks organization are trying to identify and preserve these shipwreck artifacts as important maritime relics from our freshwater heritage. The boneyard is an excellent shallow dive and snorkelling spot. It has been used for underwater archeology instruction programs.
