1. The Two Shannons Marker

Inscription. This mosaic illustrates Captain Sir William Peel's great contribution to the local community, the creation of the Sandy to Potton railway line. Because Peel owned the land he could build the railway without an Act of Parliament. The line was three miles long and opened in 1857 while Peel was at sea after serving in the Crimean War. The steam locomotive for the line, was built at a cost of £800 and was named 'Shannon' after Peel's ship, the steam sail frigate HMS Shannon. Peel's railway, The Sandy and Potton Railway ran successfully until 1861. This railway was merged into the Bedford and Cambridge Railway in 1862. On the opening of the Bedford to Cambridge Railway, London North Western operated the line and in 1864 an Act of Parliament was passed for them to own it. The last train on this line ran on 30 December 1967.

The mosaic depicts the Shannon locomotive with HMS Shannon in silhouette behind.

Peel never saw his railway, because at the opening of the line he was at sea and never returned home. After the Crimean War he served in the Indian Mutiny and died in India in 1858.
