1. A Champion: a Survivor of Dutch Elm Disease Marker

Inscription. The tree with its long lateral branch extending over the trail is a survivor of Dutch elm disease. Dutch elm disease is spread by beetles and had a devastating effect on this species of tree. The disease quickly spread throughout the eastern seaboard, wiping out millions of elms, America's number one shade tree, planted along streets and in parks all across the country. This amazing survivor tree, located along the Herring Run trail just sound of Eastwood Dr. hill, was measure in 2019 by volunteers from the Baltimore City Forestry Board at 178 inches around and its height at 74 feet!

This plaque and trail are brought to you by Friends of Herring Run Parks, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the nature, cultural heritage, and legacy of the park for those who came before us and those yet to come.
