Silver Street was widened in the early 20th century. By 1912 the Prudential Chambers on the corner of Hallgate / Silver Street, was constructed with the statue of Prudence - one of the four Cardinal virtues - as can be seen today. The Danum Hotel opposite was another consequence of redevelopment of the town, being built in 1909.

High Street was the home to England's first butterscotch maker- Samuel Parkinson, whose company produced the confectionary from 1817 until 1977.
