1. Glasgow, MT Marker

Inscription. On this day, flood waters reached a crest of 36.65 feet at the Vandalia Dam located 25 miles upstream from Glasgow on the Milk River. Vandalia Dam was constructed in 1917. The Milk River had previously flooded in 1899, 1906, 1907, 1912, 1917, 1918, 1923, and 1928.

Construction began in 1928 by the city of Glasgow to build a levee to reduce damages from flooding. Subsequent improvements to the levee occurred in 1938, which included heightening and extending the project.

During the flooding in 1939, emergency responders helped reinforce the levees which held back floodwaters caused by ice jams and snowmelt. The city was nearly surrounded by water but remained dry.
