Inscription. Chancery Lane, where you stand now, was once among Dublin’s most fashionable addresses in the 1700s. It was home to the Lord Chancellor, Ireland’s most senior legal figure, and many prominent lawyers.

Following the Act of Union in 1801, wealth and power shifted to London, and this once-elegant street fell into decline. By the late 1800s, it was crowded with tenement houses, where Dublin’s poor lived in harsh conditions with little sanitation.
