Lena van Gelderen - 27 January 1931 (Haarlem) 31 August 1942 (Auschwitz):(Submitted on August 9, 2026.)
Rachel was the eleventh of thirteen children born to Ester Hilversum and Manuel van Gelderen. She was born on Valkestraat, where the family had been living at number 3 for some time.
She was still living with her parents when, on Monday, 24 August 1942, the family received a summons to report to the school at the corner of Leidsevaart and Westergracht for transport to Westerbork. The familycomplied with the summons; consequently, all of them were gassed at Auschwitz on 31 August, except for her brothers Benjamin and Jacob, who were selected for forced labor. Of the two, Jacob perished six months later, but Benjamin survived the camps.Photographed by Andrew Ruppenstein, June 3, 20262.
