Sophia van Gelderen - 15 September 1933 (Haarlem) – 31 August 1942 (Auschwitz):

Sophia was the twelfth of thirteen children born to Ester Hilversum and Manuel van Gelderen. She was born on Valkestraat, where the family lived at number 3 at the time.

She was still living with her parents when, on Monday, 24 August 1942, the family received a summons to report to the school at the corner of Leidsevaart and Westergracht for transport to Westerbork. The family

The stolperstein for Sophia van Gelderen is visible here, in the middle of the bottom row, set in the pavement as part of a group of ten for the Van Gelderen family. Sophia and all her other family members are also commemorated on the nearby Holocaust Memorial (less than 40 meters to the south).
complied with the order; consequently, all of them were gassed at Auschwitz on 31 August, with the exception of her brothers Benjamin and Jacob, who were selected for forced labor. Of the two, Jacob perished six months later, but Benjamin survived the camps.

Deported from Westerbork on 28 August 1942. Murdered in Auschwitz on 31 August 1942.

Sophia was 8 years old.
