Inscription. Navy Pier strives to reduce negative impacts associated with stormwater runoff in an urban environment by replicating natural hydrologic conditions and retaining precipitation on-site. Stormwater runoff is collected in an adjacent underground cistern and reused for plant irrigation.

In addition to the collection of stormwater for use in irrigation, the 2016 South Dock Renovation Project met its aspirational stormwater quality and quantity goals through the implementation of several key strategies:
• Micro-grading to promote maximum direct capture of runoff into landscape.
• Stormwater storage within landscape amenities -- about 30%;
• Promoting groundwater infiltration in dedicated bioinfiltration facilities;
• Management of collected stormwater runoff using underground detention facility;
• Retainment and [two or three unreadable words] of the 80th percentile storm event [a few unreadable words] related Combined Sewer Overflow events and improve water quality.
