1. Welcome to Mill Street Marker

Inscription. In the days before dating apps, Sunday night was date night on Mill Street in Macclesfield. The street was once well known as the place where young local people used to gather. On a Sunday evening after tea, when there was nothing else to do, they would promenade, girls on one side, boys on the other, only crossing the street to chat each other up. For the older generations, precious memories of new love and old flames and even the beginnings of long marriages were started here.

Who remembers Mill Street shops from the past? Gordon's House of Cards, or the Spa Milk Bar on Mill Street from the 1940s? Maybe growing up with your friends, you went to see films at the glamorous Majestic Cinema? The iconic white domed tower of the cinema is still a proud feature in the street.

A few steps more and you will find yourself at the gate of Macclesfield prison. The jail, or gaol as it used to be written, was a place to lock people up who had been sentenced by a judge for not paying their debts. It has origins that go back to the reign of Edward II and was known as the King's Gaol. The keeper lived close to the prisoners and there

was a small yard but it wasn't a large prison, the number of inmates in 1836 was 5.

Did You Know?
So Well Remembered, a 1947 film starring John Mills, Martha Scott and Trevor Howard, set in a fictional Lancashire town, was filmed in and around Macclesfield. Various locations across the town were used but you can clearly see the Silk Museum, Paradise Mill, the Old Library and surrounding streets included in the film. There are also shots of Waters Green, the top of Market Place, Brunswick Street and Brunswick Hill.
