Inscription. A Garden for all Seasons

The George Tindale Garden, set beneath a towering mountain ash canopy, was developed as a 'Hill Station' garden. This 2.4 hectare property at an elevation of 440 metres, has an extensive plant collection that continues to thrive in the deep volcanic soil and cool mountain climate.

History

Captain Pallant first took up the land in 1893 and the garden is sometimes still referred to as 'Pallant Hill'. The land was cleared and farmed before becoming a weekend retreat for the Harper family from 1915 to 1938. Mr Harper planted many of the exotic trees and developed the horse-shoe drive. The garden was then used as a weekender by Me and Mrs Potter until 1958 when George Tindale purchased the property to further develop and enlarge the garden.

George and his wife Ruth, keen horticulturists and plant collectors, created the paths (edged by local stone) and established the plantings, gradually developing the garden downhill. Many of the paths were named after people who assisted the Tindales to achieve their dream to create this magnificent garden.

rare in cultivation were added to the garden fulfilling Mrs Tindale's dream to have something of interest in the garden throughout the year. Her love and dedication to the creation of the garden was acknowledged in 1990 when she was awarded the Order of Australia for services to conservation and the environment.

After George's death the garden was donated to the people of Victoria in 1985 and is now managed by Park Victoria.

Regular working bees are held by the Friends of George Tindale Garden to assist with maintaining the horticultural values of the site. If you would like to become involved in this volunteer group please contact Parks Victoria on 13 1963.

Nestled beneath the canopy of majestic Mountain Ash trees, the George Tindale Memorial Garden is a serene three-hectare cool-climate haven. Garden enthusiasts will delight in its intimate display of magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, fuchsias, and hydrangeas, all flourishing in this tranquil setting.

Donated to the State in 1980 by Mrs. Ruth Tindale in memory of her husband, the garden reflects the Tindales’ shared passion for horticulture. The unique collection of rare plants showcases their dedication to plant conservation and botanical beauty.

Thanks to Ruth Tindale’s careful planning, something is always in bloom- with plants flowering in the garden virtually every day of the year. The acquisition and stewardship of George Tindale added a scientific and educational focus, furthering knowledge and appreciation of horticulture.

Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the garden, pause for a picnic among the blooms, and listen to the bird song that fills the air. Be sure to admire the sculptures on permanent display, including two created by Ruth Tindale herself, a lasting tribute to her artistic and botanical legacy.
