1. Trenches for Union Pickets Marker

Inscription. Occupied by Union pickets, or sentries, these outlying rifle pits are located 800 feet north of the main entrenchments. Designed to provide Union forces with a means of early warning in the event of attack from the north, the northeast, or from across the Little Kanawha River downstream, these positions were overrun by the first Confederate assault on the morning of October 13, 1863.
