1. Head of Queen's Wharf Marker

Inscription.
The early history of Summerside is closely associated with the existence of a public wharf. Green's Wharf, completed circa 1840, was later known variously as the Town Wharf, the Government Wharf and finally Queen's Wharf. Commercial establishments and warehouses clustered around the head of the wharf to take advantage of business generated by sailing vessels loaded with produce and goods.

Regular trade with the mainland was initiated and as early as 1842 the first steamer, St. George docked at Green's Shore. Within decade local shipyards flourished nearby and many hotels were established within a stone's throw of the wharf. The Clifton House on nearby Water Street and the Queen Hotel located just at wharf's head were two of the better-known, both operating well into the mid-20th century.

In the 1860's a lighthouse and later a public bathhouse were located on the wharf. By 1877 a Wharfinger's building had appeared where usage fees were collected. Over the years many repairs were required due to storm damage and dredging was periodically carried out. In 1896 the wharf was extended by 100 feet and a warehouse was added.

the 1900's the Wharf's primary focus was the fishery. Businesses on the wharf included Phillip Gallant's café and lobster factories owned by Pascal Gallant and Fred Arsenault. At the turn of the 21st Century Queen's Wharf still serves the fishery.
