1. The National Civil War Museum plaque
The National Civil War Museum is established to provide a better understanding of the Civil War that ravaged the Continent (sic) from 1861-1865, when citizens of different towns and states waged brutal conflict against one another. This is a national center of education, research and study, that we would more fully know both our past and present-day society and nation which evolved as a direct result of this conflict. This structure stands as a living memorial to the forces of the North and South and of the civilians, all who served, fought, sacrificed and endured during the most divisive and defining period of U.S. history.
These facilities are dedicated to the proposition that, with knowledge of our history, the American people, in full embrace of democratic principles in a representative Republic, and with complete acceptance of the Constitutional standards of fairness, equality and justice, shall knowingly require its government and its civic standards to peacefully resolve matters of division and that, in doing so, we shall, as inspired by the words of President Abraham Lincoln, resolve that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
This project was envisioned and created by Mayor Stephen R. Reed to be a contribution to present and future generations of American citizens. Construction was made possible by the support of Governor Thomas J. Ridge with construction funds jointly from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvanias Capital Project Authority Act as a redevelopment Assistance Project and from the City of Harrisburg.
