Born in this house, Macphail became a distinguished doctor and writer, serving as the first professor of the history of medicine at McGill University (1907-1937). He was knighted for his services with the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the First World War. Founding editor of the University Magazine (1907-1920) and author of many books, plays, and poems, he poured forth a trenchant criticism of the modern age. Profoundly disturbed by a changing society, he contrasted the simple rural life of his childhood with the troubling complexities of urban industrialism. He died in Montréal.

Né dans cette maison, Macphail se distingua comme médecin et écrivain et fut le premier professeur d'histoire de la médecine de l'université McGill (1907-1937). Il fut fait chevalier pour ses services au sein du Corps médical canadien pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.
