1. Summerside Steamers Marker
Coastal communications were of the utmost importance to the early settlers whose farms were seldom far from the shore. The completion of the Queen's Wharf at Green's Shore (now Summerside) in 1840 gave the emerging community an advantage.
Growing trade among the maritime colonies brought a need for travel by merchants and other businessmen. The steamer St. George made a special call at Green's Shore in 1842 but sailing packets were the norm in that decade. The Westmorland made regular stops in 1854 as it sailed between Charlottetown and Shediac. The relocation of the Customs House from Bedeque to Summerside made a difference. Upon completion of the Saint John to Shediac Railway in the early 1860s, the Steam Navigation Company put the steamer St. Lawrence on a route between Summerside and Pointe du Chêne. It was succeeded by the Princess, the Northumberland and the Empress. Smaller coastal ferries connected Summerside to Hird's Point in Bedeque and for a time, to Holman's Island across the harbour.

La croissance du commerce entre les colonies des Maritimes oblige les marchands et les autres gens d'affaires à se déplacer.
