1. Melbourne (Bird's Eye View) 1882 Marker

Inscription. This view across the Swinging Basin on the Yarra looking northeast gives a graphic indication of the extent to which the Melbourne central area had grown by 1882. Open space was limited, many building were tree or more storeys, and major public building like the Library, Post Office, Town hall and major churches are clearly identifiable. Cooke's masterly work is one of a number of similar views produced in the time before aerial photography. He shows a bustling city with a busy port along the river, railways including a line joining the two city stations, and streets dominated by horse-drawn vehicles.

2. Melbourne (Bird's Eye View) 1882 Marker along A'Beckett Street
illustrator and draughtsman. Cooke migrated to Victoria from England in 1854 and apparently was a prospector on the goldfields before returning to work as an artist. The engraving was produced in 1882 and presents Melbourne from the south bank of the Yarra looking north. The Port Melbourne railway line runs diagonally across the Yarra, with Queen’s Bridge to the left and Prince’s Bridge to the right. Major landmarks depicted north of the river include Customs House in Flinders Street, the Melbourne Public Library on Swanston Street, with the Melbourne Hospital to the right, and further afield in Carlton lies the Exhibition Building and the grounds of Melbourne University.
