1. Lucy Maud Montgomery Lower Bedeque Schoolhouse Marker

Inscription. This school was rebuilt in about 1886 using structural timbers of an earlier school building built on the same site in about 1840 and it served the community of Lower Bedeque (six km. from here) until 1962. It then fell into dereliction until it was rescued and restored by a dedicated group of local volunteers. It operated on its original site as a heritage and tourist attraction from 1989 until 2019 but to save it from closure and loss it was moved in 2021 to this Park in Central Bedeque where it is intended to serve as a memorial to all of the local schools that once occurred in the general area.

A factor in the school's restoration was that the world-renowned author, Island-born Lucy Maud Montgomery, taught in this school for six months in 1897-1898, ten years before the publication of her best-known novel Anne of Green Gables. It was at Lower Bedeque, as her personal journals revealed when published in 1985, that Montgomery fell deeply in love for perhaps the only time in her life. The object of her affection was a local farmer, Herman Leard, with whose family she was boarding.

as a nineteenth-century schoolroom, are displays telling the story of L. M. Montgomery's time in Bedeque, her romance with Herman Leard, and of local education in the Bedeque area in the 19th century.

The school is operated by the Bedeque Area Historical Society and is open from late June to early September. Entry tickets can be obtained in the Museum across the street.
