Just weeks after the Orioles played their first game in Baltimore…
…the Zoo's Mammal House opened. Over time, Mammal House residents included gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and spider monkeys.

Our understanding of the needs of primates has increased greatly since the old Mammal House was built. Today, the Maryland Zoo is an innovator in the care of chimps with a focus on natural social groupings that allow the chimps to express a full range of complex social behaviors.
