Inscription.
Screech Owls are the most common owls in Texas. These small, nocturnal birds are well adapted to suburban parks. Screech Owls are 6.3”-9.8” long with an 18.9”-24” wingspan at maturity, yet can eat over 1,000 mice a year. The owls are a great eco-friendly solution to balance the environment.

Screech Owls mate for life and will return to the same nest box every year. Both parents hunt insects and small animals at night, bringing the prey back to their young in nest boxes during breeding season (March-June). The rest of the year, the pair are solitary hunters who stay in their general hunting range year around. Once established, the addition of a small population of Screech Owls to the Village and surrounding park areas will help bring the population of native wildlife back into balance and add to the enjoyment of nature at the park.

The Allen Heritage Guild, Collin County Master Gardener Association, and City of Allen partnered to install 4 owl houses throughout the Heritage Village. AHG and CCMGA wish to acknowledge the research and planning efforts of Melissa St. John who spearheaded the effort.
