Inscription.
This implement was used for planting corn at a time when farmers relied upon, ‘check row planting.’ The field was grid-marked horizontally and vertically with wire; the crossings were called ‘checks.’ The planter was pulled by one or two horses or mules harnessed to a single or double tree and fastened to a long wooden tongue. The rows were as wide as the horses. The lidded seed box was behind the horses, the farmer watched for the ‘checks’ and moved the handle to release the seed. He was considered proficient if the corn grew lined up.
