1. Agriculture in Allen Marker
In 1908 Allen was noted in the newspaper as one of the leading corn markets in the county. There were several corn shellers, seed elevators and grain dealers in the area along the railroad tracks.
Farmers in Allen grew barley, corn, cotton, oats, maize/milo, and wheat. The second week of school always turned out as all hands were needed to get in the crops. Grain dealers in town stored the grains in metal elevators-silos along the railroad tracks and shipped them to Dallas, Sherman, and Fort Worth on the railroad. At one time, Allen had four cotton gins with storage sheds and several corn shellers. By the 1950s there were only a few Allen farmers still in agriculture as many commuted to jobs in larger towns.
