1. Farm Animals Marker
The early settlers in Texas North lived in an agricultural society with most people living on farms. People depended greatly on animals for their survival and livelihood. Animals provided the raw power to drive machines as well as providing them with food. The wealth of a family depended greatly on which animals the family had and how many they owned.
The single most important category of animals on any farm was draft animals which included horses, mules, donkeys and oxen. These were, quite literally, the workhorses of any farm, providing the power for plowing, planting, and harvesting crops, pulling wagons and buggies for faster transportation, pulling up tree stumps and any other task that required more raw strength than a man could provide by himself.
Other animals were raised just for the food they offered and included hogs and pigs, cattle and milk cows, chickens, turkeys, geese and ducks, doves and quails, and rabbits. These might be food for the family or for sale to others. Still other animals were kept just for their specific abilities. These included dogs for herding cattle and sheep, cats for keeping down
