1. The Barn Marker

Inscription.
It has been said that the farmer’s barn was the most important structure on the farmstead, even more important than his own house. Barns served to store crops and protect animals, all essential to early settler’s survival.

The earliest barns in Allen were modest log buildings, but by the mid-1800s post-and-beam construction was being used which allowed for larger structures. Standard practice was to use massive timbers for the framing and wooden pegs to hold it together.

This barn was originally constructed in the late 1800’s. The older center section was constructed using pegs to hold it together. It was donated to the City of Allen from a location in Anna, Texas that was under development. It was taken apart board by board, moved to Allen and reconstructed on this site. It features the “witches cap” roofline and has two interior floors, plus a corn crib and covered outdoor space. Agriculture was the way of life in most of Collin County until the mid-1960’s.
