Getting On and Off the Island
For as long as there have been islands, getting to and from them has been a concern. This was certainly true in Prince Edward Island. In 1827, small and sturdy ice boats equipped with runners began to deliver mail across the Northumberland Strait from nearby Cape Traverse. The Capes Ice Boat Service, which also carried passengers, continued until 1917 when a ferry service based in Borden took its place. Early car ferries were equipped with rail decks to accommodate train cars taking goods to and from the Island. This ferry service continued for 80 years until a fixed link - the 12.9-kilometre bridge you can see clearly from here - took its place. A seasonal ferry crossing, which launched in the early 1940s, still connects the Island to Nova Scotia from Wood Islands.

Service, qui transportait également des passagères et passagers, a été exploité jusqu'en 1917, date à laquelle il a fait place à un service de traversier établi à Borden. Les premiers transbordeurs de voitures étaient équipés de ponts ferroviaires pour accueillir les wagons de train transportant des marchandises à destination et en provenance de l'île. Ce service de traversier a existé pendant 80 ans, jusqu'à ce qu'il soit remplacé par un lien fixe : le pont de 12,9 kilomètres que l'on peut voir clairement d'ici. Un service de traversier saisonnier, lancé au début des années 1940, relie toujours l'île à la Nouvelle-Écosse depuis Wood Islands.
